Lauderdale Tower, the Barbican, London

Apartment alterations and refurbishment comprising new terrazzo flooring, sliding doors and bespoke furniture

A bold colour scheme lies at the heart of this refurbishment project.  White terazzo floors, a large ceramics display wall, new hardwood trimmed sliding doors are married with some rare pieces of Mid Century furniture, all brought to life by the daylight flooding in through the large windows of this Barbican apartment in Lauderdale Tower.  Verner Panton chairs in pink, Gio Ponti chairs in wood and white leather and a cobalt blue upholstered mid century sofa by Greaves & Thomas sit happily next to the new sliding door with its grey and green lino surfacing.  The client has an extensive collection of ceramics which are now displayed in the mirror-backed display, reflecting not only the ceramics in the round but also the rooms and even St Paul's dome as seen through the windows in the distance.  The bathrooms, positioned deep in the core of the apartment tower, have been fitted with white tiles and large mirror walls to draw in reflected daylight from the adjacent rooms.  The wall mirrors, set at right angles in the corners of the bathrooms make the small spaces appear larger than they are.  Existing cloaks doors were re-made based on a constructivist relief sculpture by Ilya Grigorievich Chashnik.
